Can You Stand on One Leg for 10 Seconds? Your Breath Might Hold the Answer
If I asked you to stand on one leg for 10 seconds, could you easily?
It sounds incredibly simple, yet this small challenge has become an important measure in healthy ageing research. Standing on one leg requires far more than good balance. It relies on your brain, nervous system, vision, inner ear, muscles, joints and feet all communicating with one another in a remarkable display of coordination.
Research has shown that the ability to balance on one leg declines earlier than muscle strength or walking speed, making it one of the most sensitive indicators of neuromuscular function as we age. In other words, it gives us a fascinating snapshot of how well the body's systems are working together.
But there is another piece of the puzzle that is often overlooked.
Your breath.
As a breathwork practitioner, I rarely watch someone's balance without also watching how they breathe. More often than not, as soon as one foot leaves the floor, the breath changes. Shoulders lift, the jaw tightens, the tummy braces and, without even realising it, many people hold their breath.
It makes perfect sense.
Your brain senses a slight challenge and responds by creating stability. Unfortunately, holding your breath and tensing your body often has the opposite effect. Instead of becoming stable, you become rigid, making it harder for your body to make the tiny adjustments needed to stay balanced.
Balance isn't about being perfectly still. It's about your body's ability to adapt.
Every second you're standing on one leg, your brain is processing information from your eyes, inner ear and the pressure receptors in your feet and joints. It sends hundreds of messages to your muscles, making tiny corrections to keep you upright. Most of this happens without you ever being aware of it.
Those little wobbles?
They're not a sign you're failing.
They're a sign your nervous system is learning.
Every wobble is information. Your brain is constantly asking, "Where am I in space?" before making another small adjustment. The more efficiently these messages travel, the more confident and coordinated your movement becomes.
This is where breathing plays an important role.
The diaphragm is best known as our main breathing muscle, but it is also a key part of our deep stabilising system. Working alongside the pelvic floor, deep abdominal muscles and the muscles surrounding the spine, it helps create stability from the inside out.
With every breath, the diaphragm moves, gently changing pressure within the abdomen to support posture and movement. When we breathe well, this system works effortlessly. When we hold our breath or breathe shallowly into the upper chest, that natural coordination becomes less efficient.
Breathing through your nose can make an important difference too. Nasal breathing naturally encourages a slower, quieter breathing pattern and stimulates the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that supports healthy blood flow and oxygen delivery. A calm breathing pattern also helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, making it easier for the body to respond to challenge without unnecessary tension.
Think about a time when you felt nervous or under pressure.
Perhaps you were giving a presentation, stepping onto a stage or trying something new.
What happened to your breathing?
For most people, it became faster, shallower or stopped altogether.
Standing on one leg creates a much smaller version of that same response. It's just enough challenge for the nervous system to reveal its habits.
That's why I love using the Flamingo Breath.
It's not really a balance exercise.
It's a breathing exercise disguised as one.
The aim isn't to stand perfectly still or see how long you can last. The aim is to notice what happens to your breath when your body feels slightly challenged.
Can you continue breathing gently through your nose?
Can you keep your shoulders soft?
Can you relax your jaw?
Can you allow your body to wobble without immediately reacting?
These are the moments where change begins.
Try the Flamingo Breath
Stand tall with both feet comfortably on the floor.
Allow yourself to take two or three slow, gentle breaths through your nose.
Lift one foot a few centimetres from the floor and find your balance.
Keep your gaze on a point in front of you.
Continue breathing quietly through your nose, allowing your belly and lower ribs to move naturally with each breath.
If you notice yourself holding your breath, simply soften and begin breathing again.
If you wobble, smile, place your foot back on the floor and start again.
Repeat on the other side.
Practise for a minute or two each day.
Over time you may notice improvements not only in your balance, but also in your body awareness, concentration and ability to stay calm when faced with small challenges.
The next time you find yourself wobbling, whether it's on one leg or in everyday life, don't rush to correct the movement.
Notice your breath first.
Sometimes the simplest exercises reveal the most.
